Charlotte Harbor Paddlers

A competitive dragonboat club

Early in 2006, Bob Brazeau, an experienced dragon boater and native of Canada, convinced some friends at Burnt Store Marina in Punta Gorda, Florida, to form a paddling club. Since they did not have a boat, they sat on the edge of a pool to learn the dragon boat paddle stroke! Much has changed since then!

The group of friends purchased a dragon boat, incorporated as The Charlotte Harbor Paddlers (CHP), gained 501 (c)(3) status and became the Draggin' Dragons competitive dragon boat team. Right from the beginning, as now, the team competes from October to May in Central and Southwest Florida Dragon Boat Festivals.

Very recent additions to the Club include the Breast Cancer Survivor (BCS) Competitive Team Missin' Mammaries (now Muscles and Mascara) and a second boat to facilitate practices for CHP's growing membership. In 2014 we added a 10 person team, the Rogue Dragons, and formed a women's team, the Vogue Dragons, in 2016.

In April of 2011 through 2013, the Charlotte Harbor Paddlers and the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce sponsored the War on the Peace Dragon Boat Festival in Punta Gorda. The event was an Official SRDBA (Southeastern Region Dragon Boat Association) Points Race of which CHP is a member.

We are a Club of volunteers who pitch in whenever and wherever needed. Everyone can and is encouraged to get involved. Officers and a board of directors, elected by the members, and ad hoc committees, work together for the benefit of the Club and the sport of Dragon Boating. Community service includes an annual Club contribution to the local Harry Chapin Food Bank. It's rewarding to get involved with the Club and help its members thrive in the "World's Fastest Growing Sport"! Charlotte Harbor Paddlers
